About

The Deegmeister is a TikToker and a shitposter who gained virality online in August 2021 with his image macro posts in which he confessed love for female anime characters from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Please Don't Bully Me, Nagatoro. The TikToks were interpreted both as ironic shitposting and as sincere by different users.

Online History

On June 26th, 2021, TikToker^[1][2] thedeegmeister created their account, posting a Ride Wife, Lift Good meme about professional wrestler Chris Benoit. The post received over 15,500 views and 1,400 likes in four months. In the following days, the account posted two shitposts^[3][4] about Neon Genesis Evangelion characters supporting Confederates in the American Civil War.

Starting on July 20th, 2021, thedeegmeister^[5][6][7] started regularly posting image macro memes in which he confessed his love for anime girls, mainly Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley and Misato Katsuragi from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Nagataro from Please Don't Bully Me, Nagatoro, describing romantic scenarios involving them (examples shown below).

Sometimes I fantasize about Misato coming home drunk and beating me until I feel numb. She kicks me in the ribs until I can hardly breathe. Then she stars to cry and apologizes, begging me to forgive her. She holds me all night as I gently cry into her t-shirt. I there any home for me.

On August 1st, 2020, Redditor scott1swann posted a screenshot of thedeegmeister's July 29th post in which he wrote that even if Rei Ayanami was real, she would simply ignore him. The screenshot received over 3,700 upvotes in /r/evangelionmemes^[8] in two months (shown below, left). On the same day, Redditor beyondthemilkyway posted the screenshot to the /r/Cringetopia^[9] subreddit, posting another screenshot^[10] on August 2nd (shown below, right). Later on August 2nd, Twitter^[11] user shinjicel reposted the second screenshot, with the tweet gaining over 1,100 retweets and 8,700 likes in two months. On August 3rd, Instagram^[12] page yourlodandsaviourlesionjesus reposted the screenshot, gaining over 10,000 likes.

Starting in late August 2021, the TikTok account attracted significant attention on Twitter, where screenshots of multiple posts by thedeegmeister were posted. For example, on August 30th, 2021, Twitter^[13] user @ComradeToguro made a post that received over 2,100 retweets and 24,400 likes (shown below, left). On October 1st, Redditor mrdboi posted screenshots of three TikToks in which thedeegmeister told a story of trying to approach a girl who looked like Asuka Langley but being rejected after she found out about his TikTok account (shown below, center-left, center-right and right). The post received over 12,400 upvotes in /r/sadcringe^[14] in one week, with an October 4th, 2021, Twitter^[15] repost by user @VNSalesman gaining over 12,000 retweets and 123,600 likes in the same period.
