Per TMZ, X Is Dating Margot Robbie refers to a series of misinformation memes incorrectly claiming that actress Margot Robbie is dating someone she is not, using a variation of the phrasal template "Per TMZ, X is now dating A-list actress Margot Robbie." The meme became popularized on Twitter in late January 2023 as people paired the caption with two side-by-side images.
Origin
On January 27th, 2023, Twitter[1] user @Gate14Pod posted side-by-side photos of Toronto Blue Jays baseball player Ace Mitch White next and actress Margot Robbie, writing, "Per TMZ, Toronto Blue Jays Ace Mitch White is dating A-List actress Margot Robbie," garnering over 3,100 likes and 150 retweets in five days (shown below). The claim is false and TMZ never actually reported on this.
On January 28th, Twitter[2] user @JustinMLB posted a similar meme, using the same phrase but replacing "Ace Mitch White" with "Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire," garnering over 3,000 likes and 115 retweets in four days (shown below).
Spread
The meme spread across Twitter over the following days as users made new variations on it. On January 28th, 2023, Twitter[3] user @DanielJonesMVP posted a version about New York Giants player Isaiah Hodgins, garnering over 4,800 likes in four days. On January 30th, Twitter[4] user @sawdustorture posted a version claiming she's dating Phish drummer Jon Fishman, garnering over 3,600 likes in two days (shown below, left). On the same day, the official @MerriamWebster Twitter[5] account posted a version of the meme garnering over 880 likes in two days (shown below, right). That day, ET Canada[6] and SportsKeeda[7] reported on the meme.
The memes also saw spread on sites including Instagram and Facebook. For example, on January 31st, Instagram[8] user thegamedaymlb posted a version of the meme that garnered over 11,700 likes in a day. On the same day, Instagram[9] user barstooldmv posted a version of the meme that garnered over 3,000 likes in a day (shown below).
