About
Phonk & CapCut Sandwich Edits, also known as Eastern European Sandwich Edits, Slavic Sandwich Edits or Balkan Sandwich Edits, refers to a TikTok trend of over-dramatic and stylized sandwich-making slideshow videos with dubstep and phonk music playing. The sandwiches featured have simple ingredients with a base of bread, butter and cold cuts (salami, bologna, turkey), representing food in Eastern Europe. With fire effects, sparkle effects and 3D effects, most of the videos are edited in CapCut. The trend started in 2022. Many of the videos eventually used the EHHHHHHH EH EH EH TikTok sound.
Origin
On March 8th, 2022, Ukrainian TikToker[1] krutoi_galosha_ketchup77 posted a video showing a moldy image macro of a chicken wing with Skrillex's song "Voltage"[2] set as the audio. The video received roughly 27,300 plays and 2,800 likes in six months before being deleted. On September 1st, 2022, TikToker[3] zasans used krutoi_galosha_ketchup77's sound for a video showing the evolution of a sandwich's ingredients (salami, ketchup, cucumber, tomato and cheese) with stylized sparkle edits and transitions. Over the course of 11 days, the video received roughly 6.4 million plays and 923,700 likes (shown below).

Spread
On September 6th, 2022, TikToker[4] memesbyniklas cropped and reposted zasans' video, earning roughly 449,700 plays and 49,200 likes in six days. On September 7th, 2022, TikToker[5] sukmynuts posted their own sandwich edit, earning roughly 2.6 million plays and 415,900 likes in five days (shown below, left). Other TikTokers used the sounds of the aforementioned videos to create their own sandwich edits. As they started appearing on people's "For You" pages, TikTokers made referential content about the trend. For instance, on September 9th, 2022, TikToker[6] willsmithfpz posted a video in which they scrolled from one sophisticated lunch to a European Sandwich Edit, earning roughly 6.2 million plays and 1.2 million likes in three days (shown below, right).
