About

Pokimane Discord Ban Speedruns refers to a meme speedrun format which involves the participant challenging himself to getting banned from streamer Pokimane's Discord server as quickly as possible. The feat is often achieved through typing the word "simp" or referencing YouTuber LeafyIsHere in the server. The challenge is similar to Yanderedev Discord Ban Speedruns that gained popularity in January 2020.

Origin

On June 5th, 2020, YouTube[1] user Lostassets posted a video titled "Pokimane Discord Ban speedrun | Any% [00:57.8] WR (no leafy skip)." In the video, Lostassets challenges himself to get banned from Pokimane's Discord server, Poki Squad,[2] achieving getting banned through spamming "ALL POKI SUBS ARE SIMPS" in chat. The video accumulated over 121,000 views in five months (shown below).

Spread

The meme speedrun format did not see viral spread until on July 30th, 2020, YouTuber[3] LeafyIsHere posted a video in which he said that Pokimane has a boyfriend, belittling her Tier 3 subscribers for spending large amounts of money on her stream and assuming they have a romantic chance with the streamer. The video received over 968,000 views in less than 24 hours.

Following the viral spread of the video, YouTuber[4] SamS44 posted a video titled "Pokimane Discord Ban SpeedRun World Record 19.26 seconds Simp%," achieving the ban by messaging "SIMP" and "Wow Leafy was here" in chat. The video received over 2.1 million views in five months (shown below).

Following SamS44's video, in early August 2020, getting banned from Pokimane's Discord became a viral meme speedrun challenge among users on YouTube, Twitter and other online platforms. For example, on August 2nd, YouTubers[5][6] sdkipper32 and Caspy posted video of themselves achieving a ban in 14 seconds and in 6.19 seconds (Caspy's video shown below, left). On August 5th, 2020, YouTuber[7] Raiid64 posted a 2.22 second result, with the video gaining over 4 million views in four months (shown below, right).

On August 9th, 2020, Sportskeeda[8] reported about the trend. The trend maintained significant popularity in August 2020, with new speedruns occasionally being posted in the following months.

YandereDev Discord Ban Speedrun

YandereDev Discord Ban Speedruns refers to a parody speedrun category which involves the runner getting themselves banned from the Discord server owned by the developer of the Yandere Simulator Alexander Mahan, known as YandereDev, as quickly as possible. The goal was usually achieved by posting memes referencing YandevDev's past, particularly a video of him drinking milk from a chalice, or memes poking fun at his coding abilities. On February 3rd, 2020, YandereDev locked his Discord server in order to stop the raids.

But unlike YandereDev, pokimane is successful at what she does and has not doubled down on her mistakes as of late ever since she was in hot water some months ago, and unlike YanDev ban speedruns where the joke is mocking how easily outraged he is over often ridiculous (and increasingly creative) reasons, there is no actual joke here other than a dead slang term that lost its meaning being spammed. YanDev had it coming to him; pokimane is just managing her Discord properly.

Worst thing we know of YandereDev is being a sociopath who banned someone for having a mental disease which he labeled as something fake by projecting his own past tendencies on it. Worst thing we know of pokimane is her being a simp magnet with some bad Twitter takes that she actually took constructive criticism for later on. Let us be honest here and not fool ourselves: we all know these are just angry Leafy fanboys coping and being as unfunny as their source of inspiration. At the end of the day, LeafyIsGone and pokimane makes a living from videogames, a dream job for many people, whether we approve of the way she went about it or not.
