About
Private Taxi For My Burrito is a catchphrase that arose from Twitter / X discourse regarding inflation and food delivery in late July 2024. The phrase was first used in a Donnie Darko "I Made a New Friend" edit and was widely praised on the platform, spreading over the following days.
Origin
Over the course of several days in late July 2024, starting July 29th, Twitter user @Jules_Su[1] kickstarted a discourse about inflation and food delivery, arguing that food delivery was not a "luxury" and that it had gotten more expensive only recently. In response, several users argued that he should cook his own food to save money (example tweet shown below).
On July 30th, 2024, Twitter user @Sabrmattrics[2] posted an "I Made a New Friend" edit that features Donnie Darko (played by Jake Gyllenhall) saying he ordered a "private taxi for my burrito," in apparent mockery of the food delivery discussion. The tweet and recaption meme gained over 4,600 retweets and 106,000 likes in two days (shown below).
Spread
The phrase "Private taxi for my burrito" was widely praised as a good zinger on Twitter by many users, and @Jules_Su[3] himself commended the tweet and reposted the meme. As the discourse stretched into multiple days, the phrase "Private Taxi for a Burrito" was used by several critics of delivery apps.
For example, later on July 30th, 2024, Twitter user @Jaketropolis[4] used the phrase discussing why food delivery apps like DoorDash seem more expensive than they used to be, gaining over 2,000 retweets and 38,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). The same day, user @David_J1186[5] posted that while they disagreed that the argument presented by the meme was bad, they had to admit it was a good line (shown below, right).
