Californian Orders Gluten-Free Scooped Bagel In New York TikTok refers to a viral TikTok video posted by Los Angeles, California resident TikToker Taylor Offer (@tayloroffer) in October 2023, in which he was venting about not receiving a gluten-free "scooped" bagel after being denied by a New York City bagel shop worker. A scooped bagel is when the inside dough of a bagel is pulled out, leaving only the outer shell. The viral video was reposted to Twitter / X soon after its TikTok upload, inspiring viral discourse about scooped bagels, Californians and New York City bagel ethics.

On October 26th, 2023, TikToker[1] @tayloroffer posted a video in which he proclaimed that there was "nothing more stressful than ordering a bagel in New York City." He stated that he was from Los Angeles and it was evident that he was walking around Manhattan in the video. He said that a bagel shop worker refused to scoop his gluten-free bagel. Over one day, the video received roughly 3.7 million plays and 301,300 likes (shown below).

Soon after the TikTok was posted, it gained an initial slew of reactions in its comment section. Many of the video's top comments (shown below) portrayed resistance to the TikToker's story. For instance, one comment posted by Joe Hubbard on October 26th, 2023, read "Just googled what a scooped bagel was. The deli guy was correct," earning over 88,200 likes in a day.
Discourse and memes about the video spread to Twitter / X on October 27th, 2023, when it was reposted by X[2] user @Ian_Gay_briel who captioned it, "new york needs to start turning californians away at the border…" gaining roughly 4.2 million views and 30,000 likes in less than a day (shown below).

The repost inspired numerous replies and quote retweets that furthered its memetic usage. For instance, on October 27th, 2023, X[3] user @elmo_with_a_T posted a Yeonmi Park on Joe Rogan meme about Californians not eating carbs, gaining roughly 4,900 likes in less than a day (shown below, left). Later on October 27th, X[4] user @TheOmniZaddy posted images of a scooped bagel, humorously questioning what it was, receiving roughly 7,400 likes in the same timeframe (shown below, right).
Viral reactions to the video continued to surface on X[5] in the days that followed. Also, viral duets and stitches surfaced on TikTok[6] during the same timeframe.
