About

Roommate's Girl Got an IUD, Safe To Say He's Pretty Excited, also known as the IUD Tweet or January 2025 IUD Twitter Discourse, refers to a viral debate that occurred on Twitter / X in late January 2025, sparked by a tweet shared by user Adam Kessel (@Adam_Kessel1) who posted a photo of his male roommate jumping in the air and clicking his heels, allegedly celebrating his girlfriend getting an intrauterine device, better known as an IUD. He captioned the photo, "Roommate's girl got an IUD, safe to say he's pretty excited." The tweet amassed discourse about IUDs, "raw sex" and vasectomies in the following days. The tension relied on opposing viewpoints on who in a male-female relationship should take the medical steps to guarantee birth control, with the responsibility usually falling on the woman. Thus, people criticized Kessel's tweet and his roommate's celebration, likening it to all men and the perception that men are lazy and perverted. However, many people from all genders and sexual orientations criticized that notion, suggesting that all people of all genders are usually happy about having "raw sex" and that it's generally easier and less risky for women to undergo IUD insertions and birth control compared to a vasectomy procedure. As the IUD discourse continued on X, people expressed annoyance with the continued discussion. This reaction notably inspired ironic anti-memes, like ones that crudely photoshopped the photograph of the jumping roommate or played with the wording of the original caption, turning it into a phrasal template.

Spread

On January 24th, 2025, X[2] user @404paigenotfnd quote tweeted Kessel's post, writing, "I don't care for this tweet," gaining over 600 likes in four days.

On January 25th, similar quote tweets surfaced that sparked further virality. For instance, on the day, X[3] user @Richard_Vixen wrote, "Is this a safe enough space to say I find this deeply off-putting on a gut level," gaining over 188,000 likes in three days (shown below).

Similarly, later on January 25th, X[4] user @gloomf1y quote tweeted the post, stating that he was "not against IUDs" but was against men "celebrating women's pain so they can ejaculate irresponsibly," further calling said men "selfish." The quote tweet amassed over 119,000 likes in three days (shown below).

In the following days, other users challenged the anger and disgust aimed at the original tweet. For instance, on January 26th, 2025, X[5] user @_glorianas wrote, "Insane people in the quotes thinking women don't like it when men hit it raw, I promise you that isn't true," gaining over 51,000 likes in two days (shown below).

Similarly, on January 26th, X[6] user @thetolerantweft tweeted, "Can’t believe I’m about to defend this guy against the discourse. It’s okay to be excited that you can have safer, more comfortable sex thanks to the modern marvel of an IUD. Guy's girlfriend is probably excited too," receiving over 139,000 likes in two days (shown below).

Tweets were posted about the debate outside of quote tweets during the same timeframe. For instance, on January 27th, 2025, X[7] user @lilgrapefruits tweeted from the perspective of a woman telling other women to not get IUDs. @lilgrapefruits mocked the idea by saying "stay monogamous forever," portraying her belief that IUDs give women control over their bodies across many sexual partners. The tweet received over 66,000 likes in a day.

Then, later on January 27th, X[8] user @brnbne replied to the abovementioned tweet, writing, "I strongly believe The Office is why people widely believe vasectomies are (simply) reversible," gaining over 6,700 likes in a day (shown below).

The discourse started to devolve as anti-memes surfaced about it. For instance, on January 27th, 2025, X[9] user @youngtiddy tweeted a crudely photoshopped version of the original photo in which the roommate has no legs, captioned, "Roommate got hit by an IED." The tweet received over 26,000 likes in a day (shown below).

Honestly, the funniest thing about the Quote Tweets on this is how, like, a solid chunk of the people replying were like "men should never be happy btw", and then you check their pages and it's basically just a solid unbroken wall of (what I can only assume to be) generic K-Pop dudes smiling ear-to-ear.

Nobody, and I really do mean nobody, centers men harder than women who talk about "decentering men".
