About
Roommate's Girl Got an IUD, Safe To Say He's Pretty Excited, also known as the IUD Tweet or January 2025 IUD Twitter Discourse, refers to a viral debate that occurred on Twitter / X in late January 2025, sparked by a tweet shared by user Adam Kessel (@Adam_Kessel1) who posted a photo of his male roommate jumping in the air and clicking his heels, allegedly celebrating his girlfriend getting an intrauterine device, better known as an IUD. He captioned the photo, "Roommate's girl got an IUD, safe to say he's pretty excited." The tweet amassed discourse about IUDs, "raw sex" and vasectomies in the following days. The tension relied on opposing viewpoints on who in a male-female relationship should take the medical steps to guarantee birth control, with the responsibility usually falling on the woman. Thus, people criticized Kessel's tweet and his roommate's celebration, likening it to all men and the perception that men are lazy and perverted. However, many people from all genders and sexual orientations criticized that notion, suggesting that all people of all genders are usually happy about having "raw sex" and that it's generally easier and less risky for women to undergo IUD insertions and birth control compared to a vasectomy procedure. As the IUD discourse continued on X, people expressed annoyance with the continued discussion. This reaction notably inspired ironic anti-memes, like ones that crudely photoshopped the photograph of the jumping roommate or played with the wording of the original caption, turning it into a phrasal template.
