About
Puzzle Plank Galaxy (Japanese: かくざいもくざいギャラクシー, Kakuzai Mokuzai Galaxy) refers to a series of MAD videos utilizing an audiotrack "Square Timber" in Super Mario Galaxy 2[1], the 4th original 3D action game in the Super Mario series released by Nintendo. This song has been one of the well-used musical resources for MAD videos on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) since 2012.
Origin
This song "Square Timber" was written by Ryo Nagamatsu[2], a Japanese composer belonging to Nintendo (shown below, left). Since it's the theme song for Puzzle Plank Galaxy[3], the 1st galaxy of World 2 in Super Mario Galaxy 2, this song is better known for this stage name. Additionally, "Square Timber" is also included in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.[4]
Meanwhile, this song became to be utilized in MAD videos after a video titled "Au Au Au" was uploaded to NND on November 9th, 2012 (shown below, right). This MAD video featured "Au!", an iconic Moe interjection of Rikka Takanashi from a Japanese light novel/anime Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions.
Spread
In the following year, a substantial increase in popularity of this MAD video series was led by a video "Ou Ou Ou" which samples the voices of Shimakaze, a fleet girl from a Japanese online card game Kantai Collection. This video was posted to NND on September 23rd, 2013, and had been watched over 1 million times within the first 2 months.
Since after that, more than 100 of short MAD videos featuring many character's voice along with this song have been uploaded to NND.[5] In imitation of the early titles, following videos are always titled by the phrasal template "X X X", repeating a short utterance 3 times.
