The image is purportedly a Photoshop or AI-assisted edit of a photo that originally depicted actor Antony Starr doing a red carpet interview as actor Tyler Hoechlin, who has been replaced with Tarantino, stands in the background and stares at him. The edit was first posted by Redditor u/p_yth on December 6th, 2025, in response to backlash over Tarantino calling Dano the "weakest actor in SAG" (Screen Actors Guild) on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. It spread over the following days as an exploitable image macro and reaction image meme.

On December 2nd, 2025, Quentin Tarantino appeared on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast to discuss his favorite films. During the interview, Tarantino called actor Paul Dano the "weakest actor in Hollywood" while discussing There Will Be Blood, quoted as saying, "There Will Be Blood would stand a good chance at being number one or number two if it didn't have a big, giant flaw in it, and the flaw is Paul Dano […] He is weak sauce, man […] He's just such a weak, weak, uninteresting guy. The weakest fucking actor in SAG."^[1]

On December 6th, Redditor u/p_yth posted an image generated using Gemini AI to the /r/okbuddycinephile^[2] subreddit titled, "Average A24 fan vs. Average Miramax enjoyer," garnering over 12,000 upvotes in five days. The image shows Paul Dano doing a red carpet interview while Quentin Tarantino stands behind him, glaring.

The AI edit is purportedly based on a photo of actor Antony Starr doing a red carpet interview while fellow actor Tyler Hoechlin stands behind him. In the edit, Starr has been replaced by Dano, and Hoechlin has been replaced by Tarantino.^[3][4]

On December 7th, 2025, the Facebook^[5] page Cinexcepción posted a higher quality version of the Paul Dano and Quentin Tarantino image, garnering over 36,000 reactions and 6,000 shares in two days.

Later on December 7th, 2025, Redditor Arch_Lancer17 posted the original version of the meme to the /r/okbuddycinephile^[6] subreddit, titled, "There were signs," garnering over 45,000 upvotes and 630 comments in two days.

That day, the Facebook^[7] page La Cinestación posted a version of the meme comparing it to the Undertaker Behind AJ Styles meme, garnering over 3,600 reactions and 400 shares in two days.

On December 8th, 2025, Redditor fajitahotline posted the meme to the /r/blursedimages^[8] subreddit with the title "Blursed Interview," garnering over 1,500 upvotes in a day. Later that day, the original image was posted to the /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial^[9] subreddit to over 1,900 upvotes in a day.

That same day, the Quentin Tarantino Fan Club Facebook^[10] page posted the edit under the caption, "When the final boss is waiting for you," garnering over 1,100 reactions and 75 shares in a day.

Also on December 8th, X^[11] user @TFMsaad posted an edit of the image referencing Dark Souls that gained over 16,000 likes in a day.

On December 9th, 2025, X^[12] user @muddaub posted an edit using the same images of Dano and Tarantino in the I Don't Think About You At All format, garnering over 22,000 likes in under a day.
