About
Rare Steak refers to an exploitable image of a steak accompanied with dialogue of a waiter telling a patron that his steak is rare. The punchline is the steak is labeled with something the poster finds particularly rare.
Origin
The meme appears to originate from the twitter account @d_duhwit who compared a photo of rare steak to the rarity of the phrase “Respect for other people's opinions.” The meme generated buzz when Instagram account @sspamtrashh posted the tweet to over 50,000 followers on March 22nd, 2017 and received nearly 2,000 likes.
On March 24th, 2017 The Chive[5] picked up the Rare Steak image and featured it on their website in a meme roundup with the original phrase “Respect for other people's opinions.”
Spread
The meme remained relatively dormant until June 12th, 2017, when Instagram user overcooked.doggo[1] posted the first variation where "a quiet black woman" is deemed rare. The post gained over 10,000 likes (shown below).
On the 13th, Redditor Simonkjj[2] reposted the photo to /r/MemeEconomy, where it gained over 13,000 points and began to spark imitators. User throwawayyylmao0o0o0[3] posted one of the next examples, gaining over 90 points in 17 hours (shown below, left). User Mr_Privileged[4] posted a high-resolution template image on the 14th (shown below, right).
Meanwhile, one self-referential post by Drunk_N_Depressed[4] did particularly well on /r/me_irl, gaining over 15,000 points in 13 hours (shown below).
