About

#RayJHatChallenge refers to a social game made in parody of a scene from Love and Hip Hop in which the position of the hat on star Ray J appears to change positions multiple times over the course of a scene.

Origin

On August 6th, an episode of Love and Hip Hop aired in which Ray J is having a conversation with fellow star Safaree. Whenever the camera cuts back to Ray J, his hat appears to be in a different position. Twitter user @rawshud pointed it out in a tweet that went viral, gaining 175,000 retweets and 400,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

The day after the episode aired, Ray J talked to TMZ saying that the nature of the conversation he was having with Safaree was stressful, causing him to constantly adjust his hat, and the edit of the conversation made it look as though it changed positions quickly over the course of just a few minutes.

After the episode aired, social media users mocked the moment by filming themselves with hats or wigs on their head that would change position with every cut, dubbing the game the "#RayJHatChallenge." Safaree posted a video of himself performing the challenge to his Instagram that gained over 605,000 views (YouTube embed shown below).[1]
