About
Real Fake Doors refers to an exploitable image macro depicting a fake door salesman from Rick and Morty on Adult Swim. It is often used in both a literal and metaphorical sense, with the products themselves often representing unattainable opportunities, while other times images of doors that don’t open or open to nowhere are referenced as "real fake doors" — relevant to the scene from the TV series.
Origin
Real Fake Doors comes from an interdimensional cable commercial from the Rick and Morty episode "Rixty Minutes." On March 17, 2014, the episode premiered, showing the Smith family watching a series of incomprehensible commercials, movie trailers, talk shows and films after Rick modifies the TV to display channels from all dimensions. One of the advertisements Rick and Morty watch is a commercial for "Real Fake Doors," a warehouse-style shop for lifelike doors that don’t open (seen below).[1] The commercial continues as its enthusiastic spokesperson leaves work, drives home through traffic, enters his house, makes a sandwich and then returns his attention to the camera to continue advertising fake doors.
The first known meme about Real Fake Doors was uploaded only weeks later on April 23rd, 2014, to the /r/rickandmorty[2] subreddit by u/TheOriginalPol. It shows several fake wooden doors from the Rick and Morty episode "Ricksy Business," receiving 762 upvotes and 26 comments in six months (shown below).
Spread
On March 28th, 2016, the meme then spread to Twitter[3] with a GIF variant (seen below) posted by the user @thatawesomegif. Real fake door references began to increase in popularity in the following months.

While "Real Fake Doors" was a popular reference since 2014, it began to appear outside the Rick and Morty community in 2016 when another version of the meme (seen below) was popularized in 2017. Also originating on /r/rickandmorty,[4] Redditor u/Limten received 6,800 upvotes and 48 comments in six months, which went on to be reposted by hundreds outside the fandom and eventually led to the image being used as a template.
