About

"Resonance" is a chillwave (sometimes misattributed as vaporwave or synthwave) song produced by HOME. Released originally in 2014, the song would gain recognition due to its initial use on Vine, before seeing widespread use in mashups and related trends.

Origin

"Resonance" was produced by Randy Goffe, also known as slimetony or professionally as HOME, and was released as part of his debut album Odyssey on July 1st, 2014.[1] The album was released on Bandcamp by Midwest Collective and was uploaded to Soundcloud the same day, with "Resonance" in particular gaining over 11 million plays within 5 years since uploading.[2] The song would be uploaded to YouTube approximately 2 weeks later by promotion channel Electronic Gems on July 16th, 2014, with their upload being the most popular upload of the song, gaining over 50 million views in 4 years.

Spread

Around a few years after its initial release, the song began to gain usage on Vine. One Vine posted by user @hemtube’s cat gained over 85 million loops and over 400,000 likes. Another Vine, which used a clip from The Simpsons Season 7 Episode 20 "Bart on the Road," was posted by user @Spicster which gained over 21 million loops and over 210,000 likes.

The song would later become the subject of mashup remixes. On June 13th, 2016, artist Sewerslvt uploaded a mashup of the song featuring vocals from the Death Grips song "80808" to YouTube which garnered over 600,000 in 3 years (shown below, left). On June 15th, 2018, YouTuber Acrylo uploaded a video featuring a mashup of the song with clips from artists such as Travis Scott and Childish Gambino which gathered over a million views in over a year (shown below, right).

The same day the video was uploaded, Goffe wrote a Tumblr post in regards to the video, saying that he felt "like they put more effort into the video than i did the song," further elaborating, "I wrote it in my boxers and probably didnt spend [m]ore than a day on it total."[3]
