The earliest known record of an internet user comparing Ronaldo with Homelander is a November 1st, 2020, comment on a /r/soccer^[1] subreddit post in which Ronaldo refers to himself in the third person, saying, "Christiano's back, this is the most important." To this, Redditor /u/jonwinslol posted a comment that read, "Homelander shit lol," gathering over 60 upvotes in four years.

However, the earliest notable post comparing Ronaldo with Homelander is a June 9th, 2022, post by X^[2] user @alexfrco that read, "Ronaldo gives strong Homelander vibes." The post gathered over 1,000 likes in two years (seen below).

On July 26th, 2022, YouTuber^[3] Monzi (Magic of Barca) posted a deepfake video showing Ronaldo's face edited onto the Homelander Gets Applause meme, gathering over 90,000 views in two years (seen below).

On October 31st, 2022, Bleacher Report Football posted an edit of Ronaldo as Homelander as well, only to delete the image soon after it was uploaded. This was noted by various football fans, including X^[4] user @blondedcartier and the subreddit^[5] /r/soccercirclejerk (seen below).

In July 2024, Portugal won a penalty victory against Slovenia during a European Cup match. Ronaldo missed all three of his free kicks, with his team only winning thanks to their goalkeeper blocking Slovenia's penalty kicks. Ronaldo could be seen getting emotional and crying after the match, causing soccer fans to draw more comparisons between Ronaldo and Homelander.

On July 1st, X^[6] user @chiddyafc posted a tweet questioning other Portugal players for not attempting to take the free kicks instead of Ronaldo. The post received a quote tweet from X^[7] users @_nosetalgia_, who wrote, "Why don't A Train and The Deep speak up against Homelander??" and gathered over 45,000 likes in two days (seen below, left).
