Ropemaxxing, or Ropemaxx, is a "-maxxing" slang term that suggests a satirical opposite to "Looksmaxxing" which is committing suicide. The term suggests if one cannot looksmaxx, as in become attractive, then one should ropemaxx instead. The term seemingly originates from 4chan's /fit/ board, starting as early as 2018. In the 2020s, specifically in 2023, Ropemaxxing memes became commonplace on TikTok inspired by the Looksmaxxing TikTok trend and other ironic memes about Lookism and its techniques.

Origin

Currently, the earliest known usage of the term "ropemaxxing" or "ropemaxx" was posted by a 4chan user to /fit/^[1] on August 18th, 2018, who wrote, "Grip strength is highly heritable and basically if you have natty shit grip strength you are incel genetic trash and should ropemaxx, gymceling your grip is cope." The post received four quotes in the thread before being archived.

Spread

"Ropemaxxing" was used for the first time on Twitter / X in July 2019, via a non-viral reply posted by X^[2] user @capturinggnon. During the same timeframe, the term spread across 4chan. The spread predominantly started in 2020, evident in a post on /pol/ ^[3] in January 2020. On August 6th, 2021, a thread was started on /adv/^[4] about Ropemaxxing and other variants of "-maxxing" words (shown below).

In 2023, the term earned mainstream traction following its virality on TikTok. However, as of November 15th, 2023, the terms "ropemaxx" and "ropemaxxing" have been banned by TikTok, meaning when the words are searched a suicide hotline number is given to the user.

However, reposts of Ropemaxxing TikToks surfaced on YouTube in mid-2023, such as a video posted to YouTube^[5] August 5th, 2023, which was originally from TikToker @fabarnis (shown below, left). On August 30th, 2023, a TikTok was reposted by YouTuber^[6] @Meninfluencer who referenced Canthal Tilt, gaining over 11,000 views, in three months (shown below, right).

During the same timeframe, in August 2023, definitions for "Ropemaxxing" started to appear on Urban Dictionary. ^[7]
