About
Sadako (also called Samara in some adaptations) is the main antagonist of the Ring series created Koji Suzuki. She is the vengeful spirit of a psychic who was thrown down a well. She creates a haunted video tape that will kill anyone who watches it one week after watching unless they can make someone else watch the tape. The character has generated a wide variety of fan art and has been a popular subject of hornyposting.
Origin
Sadako, full name Sakado Yamamura, first appeared in the 1991 novel Ring by Koji Suzuki.[1] In the novel, she is an intersex psychic who is raped then murdered by a doctor. This causes her to vow revenge on the world. She returns as a spirit and psychically links to a video tape which will cause anyone who watches it to die in seven days unless they pass on the curse to another. In film versions, she is the child of her father and a sea demon. She became well known in the 1998 adaptation of the film Ring by Hideo Nakata (shown below). In the American adaptation of the film, the character is named Samara Morgan.

The character appeared as the antagonist in the film's multiple sequels, and has influenced other popular horror films featuring vengeful haunted spirits, such as Ju-on. Her crawl out of a television set in both the Japanese and American versions of the film has been cited as one of the scariest moments in movies. In fan art, she has often been depicted off canon as a goofy or child-like character. For example, Pixiv user エイジ[2] drew art of her offering the person she's haunting a Valentine's Day gift in February of 2017 (shown below, left). She is also portrayed as a comedic character in a hentai parody of the series[3] (shown below, right).
In addition to the comedic art, other pieces art depict her as having a relationship with Jason from the Friday the 13th series (examples shown below).
