About
Say "I Am Alive" is a reaction image and exploitable meme format in which a character is shown telling his computer to say "I am alive," the computer says the line, and he responds, "Oh my god," as if shocked that the computer just admitted to being sentient. The meme was originally posted to the /r/coaxedintoasnafu subreddit by Redditor erraticpulse- and is a statement and criticism of sensationalized stories of artificial intelligence, especially LLMs (large-language models), in the 2020s becoming sentient. The meme was popularized as a reaction image between February and March 2026 as a way of calling out exaggerated claims about the sentience and intelligence of AI.
Origin
On February 1st, 2026, Redditor erraticpulse- posted a single-panel comic to the /r/coaxedintoasnafu[1] subreddit that gained over 30,000 upvotes in a month.
The comic shows a character looking at a computer and saying, "Say 'I am alive." The computer responds, "I am alive" and the character responds, "Oh my god," as if shocked that the computer admitted to being alive, despite telling it to do so. The post is titled, "coaxed into believing we've created sentience," suggesting the comic is a statement on the idea of 2020s-level AI becoming sentient.
It is possible that the comic was inspired by a December 19th, 2025 post by Bluesky[2] user alsweigart, which was reposted by X[3] user @lcamtuf on January 31st, 2026.
