Origin

On April 2nd, 2023, the shocked gorilla video was posted by the TikTok[1] page @gorillatiks, who pretended to fart while the gorilla was eating a yellow pepper (shown below). The animal's reaction post amassed over 59 million plays and 5.3 million likes in almost a year.

A few months later, on July 25th, 2023, the gorilla eating a pepper video was added as a reaction video on X[2] by the meme archive page @domiarchive, which amassed more than 31,600 views and 222 likes in seven months. (shown below)

On November 19th, 2023, TikTok[3] user @theurbanshinobii posted the gorilla video (shown below, left) with the overlay text "Man that experimental yellow pepper that turns people into gorillas was just here a second ago," which amassed more than 6 million plays and 923,000 likes in three months. On November 20th, TikTok[4] user @mickspaghettio shared another video of the gorilla eating a red pepper (shown below, right) paired with the overlay text, "How it feels to cover up your fart," which received roughly 720 plays and 8 likes in three months.
