About

Sir Can You Spell Economy is a viral video and audio clip from the Dream SMP in which Technoblade asks Quackity if he can spell "economy" followed by Quackity responding, "Of course, A-" and then falling silent. The video was posted in February 2021 and became the subject of memes including animations and TikToks.

Origin

The original video from which the "Sir can you spell economy" clip is sourced from has been removed from YouTube,[1] with only a partial archive of the page available, making the exact date of the clip unclear. On February 4th, 2021, YouTuber[2] Jetermoh posted a Dream SMP compilation titled "Funniest moments of Technoblade as Sir billiam" including the scene at the 3:40 mark, garnering over 1.3 million views in three years (shown below). The isolated clip was also uploaded by YouTuber[3] theuserunnamed that day, garnering over 500,000 views in the same span of time (shown below).

Spread

The audio from the clip became the source of animations on YouTube that month. On February 6th, 2021, YouTuber[4] Jessibbb posted an animation that gained over 170,000 views in three years (shown below, left). On February 8th, YouTuber[5] ari bot posted an animation that gained over 140,000 views in the same span of time (shown below, right).

In late 2023 and early 2024, the video was referenced in several viral TikTok memes in which one person makes reference to the meme, another doesn't understand the reference and the original person rapidly ages because of it. For example, on October 25th, 2023, TikToker[6] @kazuha_chan posted a meme that gained over 1.5 million views in four months (shown below, left). On January 9th, TikToker[7] @kirkiimad posted a video making the same joke, garnering over 2.8 million views in a month (shown below, right).
