About

Dream SMP is a roleplay-themed Minecraft server played on by Dream Team and their friends. The server was launched in April 2020 by Minecraft YouTuber Dream and has amassed a large online following, with users stanning its members akin to popular K-pop bands. The list of notable active and former members includes YouTubers and streamers Dream, GeorgeNotFound, TommyInnit, Tubbo, Wilbur Soot, Jschlatt, Quackity and Ranboo.

History

The history of Dream SMP is divided into several major arcs that reflect notable periods of the server's development, with each arc subdivided into eras. As of August 12th, 2021, five major arcs of Dream SMP are singled out: Early Dream SMP Arc, L'Manberg Independence Arc, Manberg Rebellion Arc, Retribution Arc and Empowerment Arc. The history of the server is well-documented online on the dedicated Dream Team Wiki,[1] as well as in several YouTube series, most notably in "Dream SMP: The Complete Story" by EvanMCGaming.[2]

On April 24th, 2020, Minecraft YouTuber Dream created a new Minecraft server together with fellow YouTuber GeorgeNotFound with the purpose of playing Survival Mode. The first members other than Dream and GeorgeNotFound, Callahan and Sapnap, joined later on that day. Awesamdude and ItsAlyssa joined on April 28th, with Ponk joining on May 8th.

On July 4th, Minecraft YouTuber TommyInnit joined the server, starting the so-called "After Tommy Era." During the period of approximately two weeks, the server lived through its first major conflict, dubbed, The Disc Saga.[3]

The server adopted its roleplay-themed format with YouTuber Wilbur Scott re-joining the server on July 24th, 2020. Wilbur was the major driver in the server shifting from its mostly chaotic format into a roleplay format where major events were pre-written. The arrival of Wilbur gave a start to the L'Manberg Independence Arc, during which Wilbur Soot, joined by TommyInnit, Tubbo, Fundy and Eret, established a country named "L'Manberg," with the "L'Mangerg War for Independence" taking place between July 25th and August 2nd, 2020.[4]

Wilbur would proceed to remain one of the main Dream SMP writers in the following year. In 2020 and 2021, the server went through several major arcs, with the roleplay format on the server described as "scripted improvisation," meaning that players are given a large amount of freedom on how to behave within scripted scenarios.

List of Notable Dream SMP Members

The list of active and inactive Dream SMP members includes Dream, GeorgeNotFound, TommyInnit, Tubbo, Wilbur Soot, Jschlatt, Quackity, Karl Jacobs, Technoblade, Ranboo and others. As of August 12th, 2021, the server had 33 official members, with some playing from several accounts.

Fandom and Anti-Fandom

Dream SMP has a major fandom online which is similar to that of a K-Pop band, with users stanning server members and producing a large amount of fan labor. The trend found its reflection in fan art, fan fiction, animation, music and memes about Dream SMP members (examples shown below).

Starting in November 2020, news, often minor, related to Dream and other Dream SMP personalities have frequently made them trend on Twitter. For example, in November 2020, after Dream fell over in his chair during a live broadcast by fellow Dream SMP member BadBoyHalo, the phrase #dreamfell trended on Twitter.

The massive following of Dream SMP also found reflection in anti-fandom memes, mostly created by users reacting to Dream SMP often trending on social media. The abundance of new-wave Minecraft content creators and the inability to distinguish between them without delving into the Dream SMP fandom is a popular topic of the jokes (examples shown below).

I genuinely don't understand how Dream SMP got the fandom that it did. As a guy who grew up on Minecraft and watching Minecraft YouTubers, I've never seen anything like this.

The fandom for Dream SMP, and parts of the Minecraft fandom by extension, resemble the fandom of BOY BANDS like One Direction and BTS more than they do the fandoms of previous Minecraft YouTubers like CaptainSparklez, SkyDoesMinecraft, AntVenom, Stampylonghead, etc. How did it come to this? What is it about these guys that attracts people like this? I'm honestly stumped.
