Overview
Character AI or Character.AI is a website where users can chat with user-generated artificial intelligence characters, including celebrities and fictional characters from pop culture. Users can also create rooms with multiple AI characters in them, who will then converse with each other. Character.ai entered open beta in September 2022 and became increasingly prominent over the following months as users shared conversations they had with various characters online.
History
Character.ai was created by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, two ex-Google employees who helped create project LaMDA. On September 16th, 2022, the @character_ai Twitter[1] page announced that Character.ai was open to the public for beta testing, garnering over 380 likes in five months. On November 3rd, the Twitter[2] account announced Image Generating Characters, which generate and send images as you talk with them.
On December 5th, a blog post was published Character.ai[3] giving further background on the project, writing:
My co-founder Daniel de Freitas and I witnessed this technology's possibilities first-hand as he invented and led the development of Meena and LaMDA. With LaMDA, we explored whether LLMs could engage in open-ended conversation and quickly recognized their potential to help people. By putting the user at the center of the interaction, conversational AI can handle dynamic tasks that require the exchange of ideas, clarification and feedback in a way that caters to the user's individual needs and interests. It can empower the individual with information, education, assistance, mentorship, support and social connection in ways never possible before, and can unlock unprecedented levels of intelligence, creativity and innovation.
Online Presence
Character.AI became increasingly popularized online in the months following its open beta release. A subreddit,[10] /r/CharacterAI, was opened for the program in August 2022. On October 7th, 2022, the Washington Post[4] published an article about the AI chatbot. On December 11th, YouTuber[5] Yahiamice LIVE! posted a video using the website to chat with various AIs, garnering over 268,000 views in two months (shown below).
On January 24th, Twitter[8] user @roachodyssey posted a screenshot of a purported chat between themself and a Harry Potter AI, garnering over 670 likes in 10 days (shown below, left). On January 27th, Twitter[9] user @iamnotrael posted a screenshot of a chat with a Mario AI, garnering over 600 likes in a similar span of time (shown below, right).
On the same day, TikToker[6] @j._alt posted a video where he does a rizz speedrun on a 2B character AI, garnering over 175,000 views in a week (shown below).

On January 28th, 2023, YouTuber[7] Flamingo posted a video in which he talks with his own character AI and several other AIs, garnering over 1.1 million views in a week (shown below).
