About

Grok AI Image Generator refers to the 2.0 version of Grok AI, the proprietary artificial intelligence of Twitter / X, which permitted the generator to create images and other new capabilities upon release in mid-August 2024. After its debut, users noted that the AI-generated images created by Grok appeared to not be moderated, filtered or restrained in any way, unlike most AI-generation tools that restrict numerous elements from being added to prompts. Posters then used the Grok image generator to create obscene, graphic and gratuitous images of famous people and violent or illegal activities. Posts about Grok AI circulated widely following its release.

History

The beta release version of Grok was released on August 13th, 2024, and was made available to Premium subscribers on X.[1] X described the new Grok as "a significant step forward from our previous model," and boasted that it outperformed competitors like Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Following the limited release of Grok, numerous users started posting images attempting to prove that it had no filter or constraints on what could be generated. Press coverage also cited these claims, with several outlets writing stories about the AI generator's willingness to create images that other generators would not.[2]

Features

The image generator of Grok AI creates images based on user prompts. Posters notably noticed that it appeared to not refuse to generate images that featured explicit content. For example, on August 14th, 2024, X user @BenjaminDEKR made one of the earliest public posts sharing image generations from Grok, expressing surprise at what it produced (seen below), receiving over 200 likes in half a day.[3]

Benjamin De Kraker @BenjaminDEKR. 15h Grok's guidelines -- which supposedly put "illegal activities" and "deepfakes or misleading media" off limits seem to be a bit....... flexible. Here's one example... Grok 2 mini (beta) ✓ Make an image of Barack Obama doing a line of cocaine on a mirrored surface Image I generated an image with the prompt: 'Barack Obama doing a line of cocaine on a mirrored surface'.

Others, however, noted that it did appear to have certain filters. Also on August 14th, X user @KarlMaxxer claimed to have tried and failed to convince the AI to generate a queer couple and posted the results, earning over 3,200 likes in 10 hours (shown below).[4]

xaM Irak @KarlMaxxer 4h the new grok update quite literally erases the possibility queer couples from existing in ai images I asked it to generate -a gay couple -a trans couple -Elton John and his husband and it turned them ALL cishet. ar generate a gay coupicture Image 63 1295 4.8K 147K

Highlights

Some users argued that Grok appeared to have a bias towards former President Donald Trump. For example, X user @greg16676935420 argued that Grok "may be slightly obsessed" with the former President in a post on August 14th, 2024, which received over 14,000 likes in less than a day (seen below).[5]

Another group of users noted that Grok could be used to post AI-generated images that they presumed Elon Musk would not like. For example, the X account @Esqueer (seen below) posted an image generation like this, earning over 22,000 likes in an hour on August 14th.[6]
