About

Suno AI is an artificial intelligence music app that lets users create their own songs, complete with lyrics, album artwork and instrumentation being done after a prompt is given. In 2023, the app and site went public, with many users being able to generate songs in thousands of different styles with lyrics provided by ChatGPT. Following the release of Suno AI's V3 in early 2024, the generator garnered notable attention online as media outlets began covering it and people reacted to it, some with concern or criticism and others with excitement.

History

On January 29th, 2023, Suno[1] officially created its website with an about page that talked about the product, which would allow people to generate an entire song, complete with instruments and singing, off a single prompt. On March 2nd, 2023, Suno AI made its first public post and demo on Twitter / X referencing the "Hello, World!" program[14] (shown below).

Months later, TikToks that were created using Suno started to appear online, with the TikToker Lukas Santos[2] being one of the earliest examples of it being shown off on the platform (shown below).

Features

As of March 2024, Suno has two different voice models[3] that are available for users, with the following functionality found on their website broken down by a membership price tier (shown below).

Basic Plan $0 Free Active V3 Alpha is now available for Pro & Premier members Manage Subscription Choose the plan that works for you. Monthly Billing Yearly Billing Pro Plan $8 / month Billed yearly Subscribe Switch to monthly billing Premier Plan $24 ▪ / month Billed yearly Subscribe Switch to monthly billing 50 credits renew daily (10 songs) Non-commercial terms No credit top ups Shared generation queue 2 running jobs at once 2,500 credits renew monthly (500 songs) General commercial terms Optional credit top ups Priority generation queue 10 running jobs at once 10,000 credits renew monthly (2,000 songs) General commercial terms Optional credit top ups Priority generation queue 10 running jobs at once

As explained in the pricing breakdown, as well as the on-site FAQ,[4] content that is generated from Suno while an active member has all musical rights and liabilities signed over to the creator of the piece, including the lyrics. For free users, however, content that is given human input, as long as it is not copyrighted lyrics being used, is automatically given over to the creator with full content and ownership rights. Paid users are allowed to post their own AI-generated media to YouTube and other platforms even under the belief that they will be monetized and used as part of paid content (shown below).

Can I monetize my songs on YouTube? Yes, but only if you are a paying subscriber to Pro or Premier and, as always, subject to your compliance with Suno's Terms of Service. If you are a free user, then you can only use your songs for non-commercial uses, so monetization is not allowed. If you would like to use your songs commercially, you would need to subscribe to one of our paid plans, Pro or Premier. For more details, see https://app.suno.ai/account: Suno https://app.suno.ai/account Can I upload my songs to Spotify, Apple Music, etc.? Yes, but only if you are a paying subscriber to Pro or Premier and, as always, subject to your compliance with Suno's Terms of Service. If you are a free user, then you can only use your songs for non-commercial uses, so uploading the songs to music streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, etc. is not permitted. If you would like the flexibility to distribute your songs to those types of services, you would need to subscribe to one of our paid plans, Pro or Premier. Highlights

As of March 21st, 2024, the top three user-generated songs on the site are "bean soup," "In der Weihnachtsbäckerei" and "我抄你的筆," the first of which has nearly 22,000 plays and 500 likes.[5][6][7]

Online Presence

In late 2023 and early 2024, various posts about Suno AI began appearing online across a wide range of platforms as awareness of the app became more widespread. Reactions to the app ranged from critiques, backlash, reviews, experiments and other types of posts. Media outlets, such as Rolling Stone,[9] also began reporting on it.

On March 17th, 2024, following Rolling Stone's article on the app being published,[9] the publication's tweet drew backlash and concern from many users on Twitter after it was shared. For example, X / Twitter[13] user @ednewtonrex replied to the tweet expressing concerns about the training data used by Suno, which the company notably declined to reveal in the article. The post garnered over 6,700 views and 230 likes in four days (shown below).

Declining to reveal training data is not a good sign, and often indicates companies have trained on copyrighted work without consent. Given that these models can compete with musicians, this exploitation is an existential threat for many. ***

Numerous posts discussing the app or sharing songs appeared on Reddit around this timeframe. For example, Redditor DragonForg made a post to the /r/StableDiffusion[10] subreddit on November 16th, 2023, receiving nearly 400 upvotes and 200 comments for a song they shared (seen below). On February 26th, 2024, Redditor TheOneWhoDings made a post sharing another song to the /r/singularity[11] sub, receiving over 350 upvotes and 200 comments in three weeks.
