Skibidi Toilet Syndrome

About

Skibidi Toilet Syndrome is a fake syndrome and slang term referring to the perceived negative effects that watching too much Skibidi Toilet has on children, supposedly causing them to act like Skibidi Toilets themselves. The term was coined in July 2023 by Indonesian web users and spread online after several videos went viral showing young children imitating Skibidi Toilet by popping out of containers and singing the Skibidi Dop Yes song. The syndrome inspired memes and some seemingly legitimate warnings from concerned parents online urging parents not to let their children watch the series despite it being a hoax.

Origin

In late June and throughout July 2023, several videos of young children acting like Skibidi Toilet from the Skibidi Toilet web series went viral online. For example, on June 29th, 2023, TikToker^[1] @lulus4n_sd posted a video of their kid acting out Skibidi Toilet that gained over 20 million views in two months (shown below, left). On July 8th, TikToker^[2] @blaugrana2212 posted a similar video that gained over 5.1 million views in a similar span of time (shown below, right).

On July 11th, Indonesian YouTuber^[3] Vale XD Official posted an edit where several reaction memes are placed over clips of kids acting out Skibidi Toilet, garnering over 157,000 views in a month (shown below). The term "skibidi toilet syndrome," or "sindrom skibidi toilet" in Indonesian, began to spread following the upload.

For example, on that day, YouTuber^[4] @ShaferPrasetyo commented under the video what translates to, "This Indonesian bocil toilet turns out to be a toilet parasite from skibidi verse which has caused the boy with skibidi toilet syndrome💀💀🗿" On July 12th, YouTuber^[5] Hafidzzz 76 Gaming reuploaded the video, titling it, "These Children Have Skibidi Toilet Syndrome!"

Spread

On July 14th, 2023, Indonesian TikToker^[6] @by.milja posted a video warning about the addictive qualities of Skibidi Toilet for children, garnering over 1.5 million views in a month (shown below, left). On July 15th, TikToker^[7] @sattrupaitawong posted a video of a child acting like Skibidi Toilet, garnering over 2.3 million views in a month (shown below, right). The former video has been reposted as an example of Skibidi Toilet Syndrome several times since the original upload date.^[8]

The term continued to prove popular as a meme in Indonesia throughout July, inspiring memes on YouTube in which people react to it. For example, on July 22nd, YouTuber^[9] KrizzGuy 2.0 posted a meme titled "Sindrom Skibidi Toilet…" that garnered over 158,000 views in a month (shown below, left). On July 26th, YouTuber^[10] Windah Basudara posted a video reacting to Skibidi Toilet Syndrome memes, garnering over a million views in a month (shown below, right).

On August 2nd, YouTuber^[11] Mosque Hadrii put out a video warning parents about the syndrome, garnering over 40,000 views in a month. On August 4th, TikToker^[12] @kidz.ot.center posted a video warning parents about Skibidi Toilet and using the Skibidi Toilet Syndrome videos throughout, garnering over 12 million views in a month (shown below).

Memes and content about the syndrome began spreading to English speakers around early to mid-August 2023. For example, on August 11th, Motherhood.com^[13] published an article warning parents about Skibidi Toilet Syndrome. On August 14th, a Redditor posted a video warning about the dangers of the syndrome to /r/ihaveihaveihavereddit,^[14] garnering over 1,100 upvotes in two weeks.

On August 15th, Redditor u/Trick_Cow3178 posted infographics about the syndrome to /r/gmod,^[15] writing, "So Skibidi Toilet is now a syndrome, yep," garnering over 1,600 upvotes in two weeks (shown below, left). On August 29th, Redditor u/Gergiisz posted a meme to /r/whenthe^[16] titled, "Skibidi Toilet Syndrome," garnering over 6,500 upvotes in a day (shown below, right).
