Smiling Makeup Monkey is a viral video of a monkey dressed up with clothes, jewelry and bright red lipstick smiling at the camera. The video is typically used to depict a clueless or dimwitted attitude, with people using the video in conjunction with the phrasal template "me after X." The clip originates from a Likee upload, an app similar to TikTok, sometime in 2020. It was then reposted to YouTube, after which it was turned into low-quality GIFs and screen recorded to be shared further, becoming used in memes on TikTok around 2021.

Origin

On November 29th, 2020, YouTuber[1] @Saimamalik27 malik reposted a video containing a Likee watermark, gathering over 100,000 views in over two years (seen below). The video featured a smiling monkey wearing a dress, jewelry and bright red lipstick with a Hindi song playing in the background. This is the earliest known repost of the clip.

On June 6th, 2021, TikToker[2] @mother_africa posted the video with no caption, gathering over 2 million plays and 300,000 likes in over a year (seen below, left). On December 31st, TikToker[3] @suugarbush posted a video with a text overlay that read "me after picking 'no tips' on the iPad thingy," gathering over 500,000 plays and 87,000 likes (seen below, left).

On January 8th, 2022, the Smiling Makeup Monkey was featured in a Tumblr[7] post by skinwalkr in which it was morphed with pop star Taylor Swift's face, gathering over 12,000 notes (seen below).

In 2022, the Smiling Makeup Monkey video then began to be posted alongside music from Azaelia Bank's song "Luxury."[6] On July 12th, 2022, TikToker[4] @m4diela posted the Smiling Makeup Monkey video with a text overlay that read, "Me after getting mad at someone for no absolute reason." The video gathered over 1.4 million plays and 200,000 likes in over six months (seen below, left). On July 30th, 2022, TikToker[5] @beets13 posted the video with a text overlay that read, "me after giving the customer at work the wrong information," gathering over 3 million plays and 600,000 likes in over six months as well (seen below, right).
