About
"So You're Telling Me There's A Chance?" is a quote from the 1994 film Dumb and Dumber. It has been commonly used as a reaction image for a situation when one is hopeful for an outcome with exceedingly low odds. The phrase is sometimes used even without the screenshot or any kind of reference to the film, usually as a catchphrase via text replies to a comment in threads.
Origin
In the film, Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) confesses his love to Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly) and asks what his chances are of them becoming a couple. Mary, visibly not keen on a relationship, rates the chances at one in a million, which Lloyd responds positively to. The clip from the movie was posted on YouTube[1] on June 8th, 2008, where it has accumulated 1.8 million views in three years (shown below).
Lloyd: "What are my chances?"
Mary: "Not good."
Lloyd: "You mean “not good” like… one out of a hundred?"
Mary: "I'd say.. more like one out of a million."
Lloyd: (slowly reacts) "So you're telling me there's a chance? … yeah!!"
The first recorded use of the quote as a meme came from Facebook[2] where people were posting the meme as part of a frenzy surrounding the Powerball lottery, which was up to $500 million. The page My Mountain Town first posted the meme on November 28th, 2012, while asking residents what they planned to do if they won the jackpot (shown below).
Spread
The meme continued to spread for years as it got used and adapted into other meme trends. One notable example is found on the subreddit /r/KeanuBeingAwesome,[3] where a screenshot of a Twitter conversation between Cyberpunk 2077 and a Twitter user talk about Johnny Silverhand in the game. The meme was posted by /u/wingsofligma/ on August 23rd, 2019, and gained 21 upvotes in two years (shown below).
