Somali Comparison Survey

About

Somali Comparison Survey refers to a series of viral videos beginning in January 2021 by TikToker King Omar in which a man with a thick Somali accent rapidly lists off a number of comparable properties (i.e. video games) to another as he decides which he prefers. A number of the videos have gone viral, mostly for the humorous way in which they pronounce the properties, inspiring other TikTokers to upload similar videos.

Origin

On January 20th, 2021, TikToker^[1][2][3] King__Omar posted a video in which one man rapidly names famous figures to another, offering them as comparisons, as the other says which he prefers (shown below, left). The video gained over 345,000 views in three months, inspiring another video on January 22nd comparing other celebrities (shown below, right).

On February 7th, King__Omar posted another video following the format, this time comparing various YouTubers, including David Dobrik and PewDiePie, humorously pronouncing their names throughout (shown below). The video gained over 1.7 million views in two months.

On February 9th, TikToker @bg_technoblade commented on the video with a phonetical spelling of each YouTuber's name as said in the video, gaining over 25,000 upvotes in two months (shown below). The majority of the most popular comments make similar jokes.

The success of King Omar's videos inspired other TikTokers to play the game on their accounts. For example, on February 3rd, TikToker^[8][9] @razieff posted a video in which he asks someone to compare various cellphone providers, garnering over 16 million views in two months (shown below, left). Razieff has continued to make viral versions of these videos since, with a February 10th upload gaining over 62.1 million views in two months (shown below, right).

On February 14th, TikToker^[4][6][7] King Omar uploaded another following the format, this time comparing video games including Minecraft and Fortnite, garnering over 3.8 million views in two months (shown below). On February 20th, YouTuber^[5] Willeezy Entertainment uploaded the video, garnering over 50,000 views in a comparable span of time.

On February 26th, King Omar uploaded a video playing the game with cellphone providers, garnering over 4 million views in under two months (shown below, left). On March 3rd, he uploaded another video playing the game with sports figures, garnering over 1.4 million views in a month (shown below, right).
