Sora Shaking Hands With Mario refers to a still image from the character announcement trailer revealing Sora from Kingdom Hearts' inclusion in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. Immediately after the trailer, the image was used as an object labeling meme, with people labeling the characters as opposing forces putting aside their differences, as well as a reaction image used to comment on Square Enix and Nintendo.

Origin

On October 5th, 2021, Sora was announced to be the final DLC fighter for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. In his reveal trailer, Sora shakes hands with Mario (shown below).

Immediately after the reveal trailer, Twitter users began using the frame of Sora and Mario in memes either as a reaction image or an object labeling exploitable in which both characters are labeled as opposing forces putting aside their differences. Popular reaction image examples include a tweet by user @El_Banchito,^[1] who captioned the picture, "Together we can copystrike everything," referring to Square Enix and Nintendo's tendency to pull fan games from the internet. The tweet gained over 5,000 retweets and 19,000 likes in two hours (shown below, left). User @Akfamilyhome^[2] tweeted, "The moral of the story is that Scrimblo Bimbos and JRPG McSwordguys can co-exist," referring to two popular hypothetical Smash characters who appear in debates over the games' roster. The tweet gained over 650 retweets and 1,900 likes in two hours (shown below, right).

Popular exploitable variations include a tweet by @awesomepapers,^[3] who replaced Sora with Heavy from Team Fortress 2, gaining over 1,400 retweets and 8,000 likes in two hours (shown below, left). User @thejedahliker^[4] labeled the image "reagan and gorbachev," gaining over 140 retweets and 680 likes in the same time period (shown below, right).
