About

Sorry No, You Got Too Into X refers to an exploitable comic template in which an angel is sitting at a podium at the gateway to Heaven, aka the pearly gates, turning away a man trying to enter Heaven by telling him that he got way too into an activity or hobby humorously deemed unacceptable. Notable examples include indoor rock climbing and disc golf, among others. The original cartoon was created by cartoonist Dan Piraro for his Bizaro series in 2007. The meme template trended on Twitter / X and Instagram in early 2024.

Origin

On January 26th, 2007, cartoonist Dan Piraro released a daily comic on his website Bizaro.com in which God (or an angel) is turning away a man at Heaven's gate, saying, "You were a believer, yes. But you skipped the not-being-a-jerk-about-it part."[1] The comic (shown below) went viral on social media when it was posted to /r/funny[2] on January 3rd, 2012, gaining over 1,300 upvotes in 12 years.

The image started to be recaptioned and exploited in the 2020s, evident in a post shared by Redditor[3] Mitche420 to /r/okbuddyretard on November 14th, 2022, that showed God saying, "Did your life be like ooooooh aaaaaah ooooooh aaaaaah?" gaining over 3,100 upvotes in two years (shown below).

On March 28th, 2024, X[4] user @World0fEcho tweeted a recaptioned version of the comic which replaced the text with, "Sorry no. You got too into indoor rock climbing." Over 12 days, the post received roughly 41,000 likes (shown below). It is currently the first known version of the meme.

Spread

Going into 2024, meme creators recaptioned the "indoor rock climbing" meme, using the same phrasal template and replacing the activity or hobby. For instance, on March 29th, 2024, X[5] user @ThrowingFits tweeted an iteration about mid century modern furniture, gaining over 7,500 likes in six days (shown below, left).

On April 2nd, 2024, Instagram[6] user @bigyikes.jpeg posted an iteration about Kevin Gates starting his car with his bare hands, earning over 2,700 likes in a week (shown below, right).
