SpongePLS or SpongeDance is a 3D animation of SpongeBob Squarepants dancing, originally created by artist Trussive and popularised as an emote on the Twitch extension BetterTTV. It was notably uploaded to YouTube in a video set to the song "PHANTASY STAR ONLINE" by deko and Yameii Online.

Origin

The original animation of SpongeBob dancing was created by 3D artist Trussive in 2019. The original post has been deleted, but the high-quality GIF was archived[1][2] in October 2021 (shown below).


Spread

In the month following the original BetterTTV upload, the emote was re-uploaded to BetterTV[3][4][5] several times, under the name spongePls (age restricted). On October 8th, 2019, a video titled “spongePls” was uploaded to YouTube featuring the BetterTTV emote spongePls set to the song "PHANTASY STAR ONLINE" by deko and Yameii Online (age restricted). The Brazilian Twitch streamer cellbit helped popularize the video and GIF, naming it “Best Meme” in his Cellbit Awards on 12th December 2019.[6]

Uberduck Voice-Overs / Super Idol

On July 29th, 2021, a video of the SpongeBob dancing animation was paired with a voice-over created using the speech synthesizer Uberduck, singing “Out of Touch” by Hall and Oates, gaining over 200,000 views in nine months (shown below).

On October 22nd, 2021, the GIF was used in a video featuring the song Super Idol, gaining over 130,000 views in six months (shown below).
