About

Spotify Room is the name of a third-party app created by the Redditor u/Empty_Plastic7371 which looks at your Spotify listening history and visualizes it within a generated room design. Spotify users quickly made the project go viral through posting what the app has added in as accessories and room design choices based off their different musical tastes.

Origin

On September 9th the Redditor u/Empty_Plastic7371 created a post[1] in the r/Spotify Subreddit in which they talked about the app that they created and it's various features. In the comments of the app, it was clarified that it has the ability to create a room based off of Apple Music listening history as well. The top comment of the post was the Redditor u/pghjuice412[2] sharing what their own room looked like (shown below).

Spread

Spotify and Apple Music fans were quick to use this service and share it around the internet. On X, many people posted what Spotify thinks their room looks like, and then would post an actual picture of their room as a way to show the difference between the two. On September 23rd, the X user @monpetittichou[3] uploaded their results and then what their actual room looks like, showing the stark difference between musical taste and how they live (shown below).

Some users weren't as quick to sign onto the service, and began to warn others after looking at the terms and conditions that were part of signing in and letting the app work. On September 25th, 2024, the TikToker kirkiimad[4] uploaded a TikTok in which he looked over what some of the terms and conditions were, including letting the app add songs and create playlists on behalf of the creator to every Spotify user, while captioning it as 'rip yall' because of the breach of data privacy (shown below).
