About

"Play This at My Funeral" is a video remix series based on a commercial for the music streaming service Spotify, in which the band DNCE discusses how their songs are on a playlist titled "Play This at my Funeral." On YouTube, the videos are typically remixed with unfitting music during a funeral procession scene.

Origin

Tracking back to around the middle of the 2010's, the phrase "play this at my funeral" starting popping up in comments all over the internet. A significant example is "Play This At My Funeral" by Youtube user SpaceDwarf, a playlist coming into existence near the beginning of this comment trend, with the user seen as a starter of the comment movement. Over time, other playlists would also use this name.

On February 13th, 2017, Spotify released a commercial titled "Play This at My Funeral," in which the leader singer of the dance-rock band DNCE, Joe Jonas, comments on how Spotfiy user allymann14 lists the band's songs on a Spotify playlist titled "Play This at My Funeral," stating "that's a pretty messed up funeral" before showing pall bearers dancing while carrying a casket (shown below). Within three months, the video gained over 4.5 million views and 220 comments on YouTube.

Spread

On April 29th, 2017, YouTuber TheScreamingFedora uploaded a Thomas the Tank Engine remix featuring rapper Notorious B.I.G. dubbed over the commercial, which gained over 540,000 views and 450 comments within one week. That day, Redditor EuphoricFedoria submitted the video to /r/youtubehaiku,[2] where it garnered more than 10,200 votes (95% upvoted) and 140 comments within four days. On April 30th, YouTuber grandayy uploaded a remix of the video featuring a mashup of the songs "Shooting Stars" and "Never Gonna Give You Up" (shown below, right).

The same day, YouTuber Dolan Darker posted the commercial with a Minecraft-themed rap dubbed over the background audio (shown below, left). On May 3rd, grandayy uploaded another remix, featuring audio of the character Big Smoke from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (shown below, right).
