Spotify "This Is" Playlist Parodies refers to a series of memes which parody the covers of "This Is X" playlists available on the music streaming service Spotify. In the parodies, the photograph of the artist or the band is usually replaced with a similarly looking-person or character.

Origin

Before May 16th, 2020, an unknown user posted a parody of Spotify's "This Is "Frank Ocean" playlist cover by replacing the image of Frank Ocean with a photograph of Barack Obama (shown below). On May 16th, Redditor^[1] Mons2k made the earliest viral repost of the image, gaining over 500 upvotes in /r/okblondedretard subreddit in two months.

Spread

The image received viral spread in the following months; for example, on July 9th, Facebook^[2] group Mashuo Meme Boy II reposted the meme, gaining over 1,200 reactions and 100 shares.

Before June 24th, 2020, an unknown user created a Hugh Neutron parody that was widely circulated online. The earliest found repost of the image was made by Redditor^[3] nnishanth on June 24th and received over 220 upvotes in two weeks.

Starting in early August 2020, the trend gained notable popularity on Facebook, with meme page Screams in Merzbow contributing with several viral edits.^[4][5][6]
