About

Squatting Anthony Fantano is an exploitable image series based on a photograph of Internet music critic Anthony Fantano squatting. The exploitable is often transposed onto various album covers for humorous effect.

Origin

On October 30th, 2013, music news magazine Greenroom Magazine published an interview with Fantano on their website, which included a photograph of Fantano doing a rap squat in their eponymous green room.[1]

Spread

One of the first instances of the exploitable first appeared on 4chan's /mu/ (Music) board on November 10th, 2013; its earliest variants were simple gifs of the image.[2] A June 3rd, 2014 Tumblr thread by yungterra contains the earliest known instances of Fantano edits.[6] The first 4chan thread focused on inserting Fantano into album covers was posted to /mu/ on August 25th, 2014.[3] This thread received over 300 posts and 150 images before it was archived. A thread for the exploitable was created on the forums for the lyric site Rap Genius in 2014.[5] There is also a Twitter based on examples of the exploitable.[4]

Official Response

Fantano shared 4 edits of himself into various album covers to his social media accounts on August 26th, 2014.[7] Four days after that, he tweeted a link to an Imgur folder containing the edits from the /mu/ thread. This tweet inspired the creation of the previously mentioned Rap Genius thread.
