#StayWoke is a series of captioned TikTok videos in which the user pretends to be asleep until something wakes them up. The videos, which began in August 2019, features text describing what the person or certain establishment is ignoring and then shifts to describing what alerts them to wake up. The videos are also typically silent until the beginning of the song "Super Bass" by Nicki Minaj starts when they "wake up."

Origin

On August 5th, 2019, TikTok user @ryaniscrying uploaded a video about when his mother wakes him up (shown below). The video garnered over 304,200 likes and 20,500 shares in 14 days.

Spread

On August 6th, 2019, numerous TikTok users uploaded their own version of @ryaniscrying's video. TikToker @zinccx's video about school gained over 374,500 likes and 16,500 shares in 13 days. Some videos were more along the woke lines than others. For example, @realliamsilk uploaded a video about a dog while @danielcowan_ uploaded a video about pollution (shown below, right). The video garnered over 87,800 likes and 145,100 likes respectively in 13 days.
