About
Steven Grant Looking At Security Footage, also known as Guy Looking At Himself In CCTV Camera, is an exploitable meme format used in GIF and image captions that comes from the 2022 Disney+ series Moon Knight, in which the character Steven Grant (played by Oscar Isaac) is looking at security footage and finds himself staring back. The scene inspired a series of memes after its release in which the source of one's problem always ends up being themselves.
Origin
In the Marvel series Moon Knight, the protagonist Steven Grant, played by actor Oscar Isaac, has moments where he is not in control of his body, with another personality called Marc Spector taking over his body, often committing various crimes and atrocities. In the second episode of the series, released on April 2nd, 2022, Steven blacks out inside of the museum that he works at, and the following day he goes back to his work to ask to see the security footage, not sure how he managed to get himself home. Upon viewing the footage, he is disturbed to find his body, with Marc as the pilot, staring back at him intently. The scene in question was uploaded to YouTube by the channel instant clips[1] on April 7th, 2022 (shown below).
The earliest meme to utilize the scene was posted to Reddit on April 18th, 2022, by Redditor Staghound,[2] in which the Redditor is disturbed to find that he himself is to blame for gay porn being watched on his computer, earning 11,000 upvotes in two months (shown below).
Spread
The meme template began to spread quickly, particularly on Reddit, with an example being posted to the Prequel Memes subreddit on April 20th, 2022, by the Redditor Fishyboi360,[3] in which Anakin finds out the cause of Padme's death (himself), earning over 5,000 upvotes in one month (shown below).
On May 28th, 2022, Imgflip user TheHobGoblin[4] uploaded a variation of the meme template to the site in which the punchline is that the person who ruined your social life is yourself (shown below).
