About

Dick Fight Island refers to a yaoi, smut manga that's about gay men competing on an island for orgasms. It surfaced in meme discourse on Twitter around mid-2020. Jokes about it center on the title and book cover, as well as internet users' reactions to it when they see it on a bookshelf. It was originally written in 2017, but Dick Fight Island memes resurfaced en masse in early 2022.

Background

Dick Fight Island was originally released in 2017, written by author Reibun Ike.^[1] However, Volume 1 wasn't released officially until 2019 by the publishing company Libre Inc.^[2] On May 11th, 2021, the book was then released in English translation. After its English release, it received mixed reviews from critics. Some, like Briana Lawrence, a writer for The Mary Sue,^[3] gave it a good review while others, like Rebecca Silverman of Anime News Network,^[4] gave it a three out of five stars rating.

Plot

The story takes place in an archipelago of eight islands called Pulau Yong'Unda that wasn't discovered until the 20th century.^[2] The King of Pulau Yong'Unda holds a contest every four years called, "The Great Wyrm Tournament," wherein, eight competitors from each island compete to make the other orgasm first. The competition is associated with, "manliness" in the universe. The story's protagonist, Hart, is a member of the Jewel Tribe and returns from studying abroad in the ninth part of the first volume to take place in the tournament.

Online Presence and Related Memes

On August 1st, 2020, the Twitter^[5] account SuBLimeManga posted a tweet that stated, "🔥NEW YAOI TITLE ANNOUNCEMENT🔥" and revealed that the preorders for Dick Fight Island in English translation were incoming. Over two years, the tweet received roughly 1,400 likes.

The tweet garnered reactions from users like Twitter^[6] user i_reibun who quote retweeted on the 2nd saying, "Wait,　Dick Fight Island !!???　lol," and earning over 160 likes (shown below, left). On November 18th, 2020, Twitter^[7] user CDCubed attached a screenshot of the tweet along with a reference to medieval dick and boob armor, earning over 660 likes in two years (shown below, right).

On April 18th, 2022, Twitter^[8] user KNIFE_TWINK posted about seeing Dick Fight Island on the shelf in a bookstore, captioning it, "Currently at the f word manga section." It earned roughly 100,700 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). The tweet inspired many reactions from other users and meme creators. For instance, Twitter^[9] user jayelezra posted a reply that zoomed in on the Dick Fight Island cover, stating, "Rule #1 of Dick Fight Island: we do not talk about Dick Fight Island," in reference to the movie Fight Club. The reply earned roughly 5,800 likes in the same amount of time (shown below, right).
