Girls und Panzer (Japanese: ガールズ&パンツァー; abbr: ガルパン, Garupan or GuP) is a Japanese TV anime series created by Japanese anime studio Actas and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima. Additional media include a manga adaptation, several spin-off manga, a PS Vita and mobile game, and a feature-length film.
Premise
Girls und Panzer takes place in a world in which World War 2 era tanks are pitted against each other for sport. The traditional martial art, known as Sensha-dō, (戦車道) or "Tankery" is practiced by young women for the purpose of developing strong, feminine, minds and bodies. In order to promote independence and leadership, school also takes place on massive seaborne school carriers. The plot follows Miho Nishizumi, new transfer to Ōarai Girls High School, as she develops her amateur high school team into a competent force in a quest to win the 63rd National High School Sensha-Dō Tournament.
History
The 12-episode anime began airing October 8, 2012 and concluded on March 25, 2013. Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime for North America, releasing the episodes and OVA's on December 3, 2013 and February 25, 2014. A 120 minute theatrical film, Girls und Panzer der Film, acting as a sequel to the anime, was released in Japanese theaters on November 21, 2015, to great success. In addition to manga adaptations of the anime and film, several spin-off mangas have been released, including Girls Und Panzer: Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu!, Girls Und Panzer: Ribbon Warrior, Girls und Panzer: Little Army, and Girls und Panzer: Phase Erika!
