About

World War II was a global conflict that was underway by 1939 and ended in 1945. It involved most of the world's nations. It was the most widespread war in history. Marked by significant events involving the mass death of civilians, including the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, it is the deadliest conflict in human history, resulting in 50 million to over 70 million fatalities.[1]

Inter-war Period

The War

Although some historians debate that the war started in 1937 with the Japanese invasion of China, it is generally accepted that the war started in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland, and that the war ended with the surrender of Japan after the American atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet invasion of Manchuria. Many noteworthy events took place during the war, including Operation Barbarossa and the subsequent Eastern European Front, the Attack on Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the aforementioned atomic bombings of Japan, and the Holocaust. Historical figures such as Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, and Joseph Stalin were prominent during the war.

The events of World War II have left its influence on modern military, social, economic, political, and internet culture.
