About

Mashle, full name Mashle: Magic and Muscles, is a manga and anime comedy shonen series concerning a teenage boy with superhuman strength but no magical capabilities who enrolls in a magic school while trying to hide his deficiency from the other students. The series developed a passionate online fandom and elements of the anime have inspired some memes on social media.

History

The Mashle manga was written by Hajime Kōmoto[1] and was first published in Weekly Shonen Jump on January 27th, 2020. It ran for three years, concluding on July 3rd, 2023.[2]

The story focuses on Mash Burnedead, a child born without magic in a land where living without magic is outlawed. To protect his secret, he is forced to enroll in a magic school to become the top student in his class and earn the title of Divine Visionary. While Mash has no magical ability, he does have superhuman strength, which allows him to overcome challenges and battles with magicians.

The anime premiered on April 3rd, 2023, and has run two seasons as of July 1st, 2024 (trailer shown below), with a third season announced.[4]

The series often plays as a parody of shonen tropes[3] and Harry Potter. The Harry Potter similarities include Mashle's magic academy, Easton, sharing many similarities with Hogwarts, a Quidditch-like sport (anime clip shown below), and a Dumbledore-like headmaster named Wahlberg.
