Meccha Chameleon is a hide-and-seek-based multiplayer video game created by Japanese indie game developer lemorion_1224 in which the players attempt to camouflage themselves around the map by painting their character models to blend in with backgrounds or items so they don't get caught by hunters, who bring a shotgun that shoots paint to catch other players.

The game was released in early June 2026 and rapidly gained virality in late June 2026, with memes, edits, fan art and clips showing player creativity to avoid getting caught garnering widespread attention.

History

On May 15th, 2026, Twitter / X^[1] user @lemorion1224 uploaded a short trailer for the indie game Meccha Chameleon. The post received more than 55,000 likes in one month.

Later on June 10th, 2026, the game was released on Steam under the same name.

On the same day, the trailer was also uploaded by YouTube^[2] user Niche Gamer Trailers and received more than 28 million views in one month.

Gameplay

The game can be played with up to 24 players in one room. In the basic mode, one or more of them becomes "it" (known as a "hunter"), either voluntarily or randomly chosen, while the others have time to camouflage by painting themselves anywhere on the map before the game starts. Then the hunters must find other players by catching them using the paint shotgun until the time's up.

Upon release, there were three different game modes in Meccha Chameleon:

1. Normal: Players split into two teams with hiders (chameleons) and seekers (hunters). The goal is that seekers must find all the hiders within the time limit, while hiders must camouflage themselves and survive until the timer runs out.
2. Increasing Oni (Infection): Everyone starts as a hider except one (or more). When a seeker catches a hider, the hider turns into a hunter. The game ends when all hiders are caught or if at least one hider survives until the timer runs out.
3. Double: In the first half of the game, everyone hides. In the second half, everyone becomes a seeker. The player who finds the most hidden people wins the round.

As Meccha Chameleon grew in virality following its release, numerous memes, posts, gaming clips and other content began to appear online in mid-2026.

For instance, on June 22nd. 2026, X / Twitter^[8] user @SaGui_107 posted a meme depicting the game's title above an image of a child hiding from another one by painting themselves white, garnering over 512,100 views, 50,000 likes and 30 replies in a week.

On June 26th, 2026, the developer uploaded a celebration post on Steam^[3] as the game has hit 10 million sales. As of June 29th, 2026, the game received "very positive" based on more than 17,000 reviews on Steam.

The game gained popularity in late June 2026, with clips and edits showing player creativity to avoid getting caught.

For example, on June 24th, 2026, YouTuber^[4] 3oey Gaming uploaded gameplay shorts showing the player camouflaging as a bee circling a flower. The post received more than 29 million views in five days.

On June 26th, 2026, Twitter / X^[5] user @AsiGarSan2 uploaded a post showing another player trying to camouflage with the caption, "indetectable 👌." The post received more than 210,000 likes in three days.

Also on June 26th, Redditor only-comments-egg shared a series of images of their crochet Meccha Chameleon characters to the /r/crochet^[9] subreddit, garnering over 1,000 likes and 30 comments in three days.

On the next day, Twitter / X ^[6] user @blupixl__ uploaded a "Somebody That I Used to Know" drawing referencing the player camouflaging perfectly getting snitched by other player. The post received more than 182,000 likes in two days.

On June 28th, 2026, YouTuber^[7] Lessons In Meme Culture uploaded a video discussing the game. The video received more than 110,000 views in one day.
