About

Mina the Hollower is an upcoming retro-style 2D video game by Yacht Club Games, best known for Shovel Knight, where the player takes control of an anthropomorphic mouse. The game features a retro Zelda-like gameplay and graphical style similar to the original Link's Awakening on Gameboy Color. The game was announced in February 2022 and surpassed its Kickstarter goal in one day. The furry community also took an early interest in the game due to the protagonist.

History

On February 1st, 2022, Yacht Club Games announced its upcoming game Mina the Hollower on its website[1] and Twitter[2] account. That day it also launched a Kickstarter[3] campaign with a goal of $395,000, which was surpassed within 24 hours. A trailer was posted to the IGN YouTube channel notably showcasing the gameplay and graphics, inspired by Zelda games and Gameboy Color games (shown below). The trailer gained over 65,000 views in under 24 hours. The game's announcement was also reported on by a number of gaming, tech and entertainment news sites including Kotaku,[4] Polygon[5] and IGN.[6]

Fan Art

The game inspired a large response in the form of fan art the day it was announced, mostly depicting the protagonist Mina. For example, Twitter[11] user @TommoTheCabbit posted a series of fan drawings of Mina using her powers shown in the trailer, gaining over 750 likes in a day (shown below).



On February 2nd, Twitter[12] user @flipskip1 posted a piece of fan art depicting Mina in a sprite-like style, gaining over 400 likes in under a day (shown below).

Response From Furries

Mina the Hollower attracted significant attention from the furry community following its announcement, who began making memes, fan art and expressing their love for the character. For example, on February 1st, 2022, Twitter[7] user @MetManMas posted, "Every announcement of a new property with anthropomorphic animals be all like," along with a comic made in Animal Crossing about a furry being the first to create lewd fan art of the character (shown below). On the same date, Twitter[8] user @cyansorcery posted, "anyways yacht club's new game mina the hollower is just link's awakening for furries and I'm definitely here for it seeing as 1) link's awakening is my favorite game 2) I'm a furry."

Twitter[9] user @KeijiCase, also a furry, posted a meme showing excitement about the game, gaining over 100 likes in under a day (shown below, left). On the same date, Twitter[10] user @ChromArtChilled posted belly expansion fan art of Mina, gaining over 398 likes and 80 retweets in a similar span of time (shown below, right).
