Mortal Kombat 1 is 2023 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and twelfth main installment in the Mortal Kombat series. Announced in May 2023, the game is expected to release in September 2023. The game is a soft reboot of the series which restarts its timeline.
History
On May 10th, 2023, video game developer NetherRealm Studios released a teaser for its next game.[1] On May 18th, 2023, NetherRealms officially announced[2] Mortal Kombat 1, the twelfth installment in the Mortal Kombat fighting video game series. The announcement trailer for the game, released on the same day, earned over 7.4 million views on YouTube in two months (shown below).
In the following weeks, NetherRealm Studios released trailers for various characters, including trailers for Lin Kuei clan and for Umgadi warriors (shown below, left and right).
The game was released on September 19th, 2023.
Gameplay and Features
Mortal Kombat 1 is a fighting game which, similar to its predecessors, features brutal, gore-filled combat between two characters. The game introduces the Kameo mechanic, which adds a supporting fighter for each player that can enter into the fight to perform one of their moves (gameplay video shown below).
Mortal Kombat 1 restarts the franchise's timeline, taking place in a timeline created by Fire God Liu Kang.
Online Presence
DLC Characters
On July 21st, 2023, six DLC characters for the game were introduced,[3] including comic book characters Omni-Man, Homelander and Peacemaker. The introduction of both Omni-Man and Homelander, both popular supervillians, spawned viral posts on social media (examples shown below, left and right).
Tanya Appearance Change Controversy
On June 21st, 2023, the trailer introducing characters Li Mei, Tanya and Baraka was released. The changes to the appearance of Tanya, a returning character who appeared in Mortal Kombat (2011) and previous installments of the game, were criticized by some users online, which sparked a debate on social media (exampe tweets shown below).[4][5]
Switch Performance Controversy
After the release of the game, many users complained about the graphical downgrade of the game on the Nintendo Switch. The complaints led series creator Ed Boon to promise fixes for the Switch version were incoming.
