About
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Japanese: 無職転生 〜異世界行ったら本気だす〜) is a Japanese light novel series created by Rifujin na Magonote and illustrated by Shirotaka. The series started its publication on November 2022 and focuses on a jobless and hopeless man who dies after having a sad and reclusive life and reincarnates in a fantasy world while keeping his memories. An anime series adaptation produced by Studio Bind aired on January 2021, with a second season currently airing in Japan since July 2023.
Plot
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation follows the story[1] of Rudeus Greyrat, who is actually an unnamed 34-year-old Japanese NEET that reincarnated in another world and begins a new life full of adventure.
History
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation was originally published on the internet web novel website Shōsetsuka ni Narō[2] on November 22nd, 2012. The light novel[3] version was announced a year later under Media Factory's MF Books imprint with illustrations (examples below) done by a Pixiv user called Shirotaka.
2021 Anime Adaptation
On March 15, 2019, an anime adaptation of Mushoku Tensei[4] was announced by MF Books. Later that year, on October 18th, 2019, a trailer of the anime was posted on YouTube[5] by @gamespotuniversetrailers61. The video (shown below) garnered over 2.2 million views and 8,000 comments in four years.
The series was originally scheduled to premiere in 2020, but it was delayed[6] until January 2021 due to production issues. A second season was announced on March 2023 and its airing started on July 2023. The first trailer was posted on YouTube[10] on July 3rd, 2022, which garnered 2.2 million plays and 108,000 likes in a year.
Reception
Mushoku Tensei light novel had over 13 million copies[7] in circulation by June 2023. The show snatched the number 1 spotlight in the 2022 "The Overall Top 50 Manga and Light Novels."[8]
Online Presence
Online, many clips and quotes from the show are used in a series of meme formats. For example, on March 5th, 2021, YouTube[9] user @AmanojakuPenguin. The video (shown below) garnered roughly 2,700 views and 55 likes in two years.
Fandom
On August 14th, 2014, the Musholu Tensei Wiki[11] was created, garnering over 639 articles over the next years. The r/mushokutensei/[12] subreddit was launched on October 14th, 2014, allowing discussions about the light novel series.
The series also has received a considerable amount of fan arts since its 2012 premiere. For instance, on October 31st, 2021, DeviantArt[13] user @seikcul posted a fan drawing of Eris (shown below, left), which received roughly 1,400 views and 21 favorites in two years. On March 15th, 2021, DeviantArt[14] user @whitersnake posted a Sylphiette render (shown below, right), which received over 8,500 views and 49 favorites in two years.
