About

Octopath Traveler is a JRPG video game developed by Square Enix and released on the Nintendo Switch.

History

Octopath Traveler was directed by Keisuke Miyauchi and developed by Square Enix in collaboration with Acquire.[1] The game features a 2D, pixelated art style which allows 3D movement, known as "HD 2D." The game allows players to choose one of eight paths at the start of the game, and the path the player chooses influences the style of gameplay throughout the campaign. The game features turn-based combat.

The game was first announced on January 13th, 2017. A demo was released on the Nintendo e-shop later that year, on September 13th (trailer shown below). A second demo was released on June 14th, 2018, after Nintendo's E3 presentation. Octopath Traveler was released on July 13th, 2018.

Reception

Octopath Traveler opened to highly favorable reviews from critics, receiving an 84 rating on Metacritic.[2] Critics praised the game's scope, storytelling, and beautiful art style. Several critics called it one of the best games available for the Nintendo Switch. IGN gave the game a 9.3 in its video review (shown below)

Online Presence

At the time of its release, Octopath Traveler had a modest online presence. The game has over 2,500 likes on Facebook[3] and a subreddit with over 6,800 readers.[4]
