Only Up! is a 2023 3D platformer video game in which the player walks and climbs upwards into the sky through over a series of bizarre, out-of-place structures and creatures. Inspired by Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, the game achieved viral popularity with streamers in June 2023.

History

On May 24th, 2023, indie 3D platformer video game Only Up! was released^[1] by SCKR Games on Steam. On May 29th, a release trailer for the game premiered on YouTube,^[2] where it gained over 37,000 views in four weeks (shown below).

Gameplay and Features

Only Up! is a 3D platformer in which the player is tasked with walking and climbing building and bizarre structures to reach the top. The game is inspired by the 2017 video game Getting Over It With Benedict Foddy: mistakes can set the player far behind, and the journey is accompanied by a narration of the character's personal stories.

Reception

Upon release, the game received mixed reviews. On Steam,^[3] the game maintained a 68% approval rating as of June 28th with 4,600 user reviews.

Fandom

Streamer Popularity

In mid-June 2023, the game achieved popularity with streamers on Twitch, YouTube and other platforms, with gameplay clips and fail clips going viral on social media. For example, on June 17th, 2023, xQc posted a gameplay video of the game that gained over 415,000 views on YouTube^[4] in ten days (shown below, left). On June 18th, Cr1TiKaL posted a speedrunning video that received over 2.1 million views (shown below, right).^[5]

Clips from the game also went viral on Twitter. For example, on June 28th, 2023, streamer TimTheTatman posted^[6] a clip that received over 100 retweets and 2,700 likes in five hours (shown below).
