About

Persona 4 is a role-playing video game developed and published by Atlus, and the fifth main installment in the Persona series of games, and a part of the larger Megami Tensei series of RPGs. Set in the rural Japanese town of Inaba, the game follows a high school student who recently moved to the town, eventually investigating strange murders that occur throughout and rumors surrounding a mysterious phenomenon known as the Midnight Channel. It was released to critical acclaim, eventually seeing a number spinoffs and adaptations.

History

Persona 4 was developed and published by Atlus and released originally for the Playstation 2 on July 10th, 2008 in Japan, and a wider release throughout late 2008 and early 2009. In 2012, an enhanced rerelease of the game titled Persona 4 Golden was released originally as an exclusive title for the Playstation Vita, featuring new story content and gameplay features. Persona 4 Golden would eventually be ported to Microsoft Windows on June 13th, 2020.

Also in 2012 was the release of Persona 4 Arena, a fighting game developed in collaboration with Arc System Works that originally released in arcades in Japan, before seeing a home console release for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in other regions later that year. Arena follows events two months after Persona 4 and three years after Persona 3, with a roster featuring characters from both games. In 2013, a sequel titled Persona 4 Arena Ultimax was released which added the abillity to play as Shadow versions of most of the roster and gameplay tweaks, followed by a home console release in 2014 for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The home console release was also supported by DLC for additional characters and the ability to play through the story campaign for the original Persona 4 Arena. A port for Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows will be released on March 17th, 2022.

In 2015, a rhythm game spin-off, titled Persona 4: Dancing All Night was released for the Playstation Vita, followed by a port to the Playstation 4 in 2018.

The Animation

Throughout late 2011 and early 2012, an anime adaptation produced by AIC titled Persona 4 The Animation aired which adapted the entirety of the original game. Reception

Persona 4 was released to critical acclaim upon release, earning the Persona series its highest Metacritic scores yet up until the release of Persona 5. Its original Playstation 2 release would earn a Metacritic score of 90/100 based on 47 critic reviews, while its enhanced rerelease, Persona 4 Golden would earn a higher score of 93/100 based on 61 reviews alongside the distinction of being the highest rated Playstation Vita game on the site. Arena and Arena Ultimax would also see positive reviews while Dancing All Night would receive lukewarm reception.
