About

Yu Narukami Dancing / Specialist refers to videos of Persona 4 protagonist Yu Narukami and other characters dancing to the Specialist theme from Persona 4 with absurd image macro captions in impact font. The meme began on the subreddit r/OkBuddyPersona in January 2020, first using various Persona characters before narrowing on Narukami in late February.

Origin

Yu Narukami is the protagonist of the 2008 Atlus game Persona 4. In October 2011, an album by the Atlus Sound Team containing a rearrangement of the "Specialist" theme from Persona 4 was released.[1] The theme was uploaded to YouTube on August 7th, 2012 by GreenTurtle112, where it received over 450,000 views in almost eight years (shown below, left).[2] Atlus released a Persona 4 spin-off rhythm game called Persona 4: Dancing All Night. The game involves characters from Persona 4 dancing to various songs. On June 4th, 2016, YouTube user Haseo 009 uploaded a video of Narukami dancing to the Specialist theme, gaining over 350,000 views in four years (shown below, right).[3]

The Yu Narukami dancing trend seems originate from the r/OkBuddyRetard themed Persona subreddit r/OkBuddyPersona, with the earliest form of the meme being various Persona characters from Atlus’ Dancing All Night series dancing to different songs. A January 5th, 2020 post by user Nia-Teppelin features the Persona 4 character Nanako Dojima dancing to the cock and ball torture Wikipedia narration.[4]

On January 22nd, Redditor lustforspace posted a video with different Persona characters dancing to the "Life Will Change" theme from Persona 5 with a caption reading "When your Mom hides your Playstation / So you become gay and hide her grandchildren." The post gained over 1,200 upvotes in six months.[5] On January 26th, r/PERSoNA user Gamingvscake posted a video in the same format with Persona 3 characters, gaining 2,400 upvotes in the same period.[6] Several similar posts were made from late January to mid-February on r/OkBuddyPersona.[7][8][9][10]

Spread

The meme spread in early to mid-2020 with Yu Narukami paired with different captions. Additionally, people began using other characters to perform the Specialist dance in place of Narukami. For example, on April 29th, a video in the format submitted to r/teenagers by user LicSiller garnered over 25,000 upvotes in three months (shown below).
