About
Queer Eye is a reality television series in which five gay men, aka "The Fab Five," makeover a straight man (in most episodes), helping him improve his life by boosting his confidence and style via a home makeover, grooming, fashion, cooking and cultural tips. The series airs on Netflix and is a reboot of the series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, which featured a similar premise and aired on Bravo between 2003 and 2007.
History
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, later shortened to Queer Eye, aired between July 15th, 2003 and October 30th, 2007 on Bravo.[1] Netflix rebooted the series, which premiered on February 7th, 2018. The show is created by David Collins and features a new cast: Antoni Porowski, the food and wine expert, Tan France (fashion), Karamo Brown (culture and lifestyle) Bobby Berk (design) and Jonathan Van Ness (grooming). The show released a second, eight episode season on June 15th.
Reception
Queer Eye has been widely praised, gaining an aggregate score of 73/100 on Metacritic.[2] Critics praised the new cast's chemistry and the less campy atmosphere of the show compared to the original. Most called the show heartwarming and sweet Some were less charmed by the show, saying sometimes the cast overshadowed their mission at hand. Grooming expert Jonathan Van Ness, the most flamboyant of the group, proved divisive, as some liked his energy while others found it obnoxious. The show won Emmys for its casting and structure and is nominated for several People's Choice Awards.
Online Presence
The show has spawned a devoted fanbase. It has over 197,000 likes on Facebook[3] as well as 313,000 Twitter followers.[4] It also has a subreddit of over 12,000 followers.[5] It also has inspired a passionate following with parodies on Tumblr. Buzzfeed[6] covered 21 Queer Eye parodies on the side on June 21st, 2018. These parodies often make fun of how Bobby seems to do an incredible amount of work making over a subject's home while others like Antoni teach them how to make simple foods, often involving avocados (examples shown below).
Can You Believe
In the first episode of season 1, while sharing grooming tips with that episode's subject, Jonathan Van Ness exclaimed "Can you believe?" (shown below).
The moment became a reaction image on Tumblr. For example, user nuka-rockit posted a Fireflies joke with the image, gaining over 2,300 notes (shown below, left). User skyrim-hates-her posted a Skyrim reference that gained over 800 notes (shown below, right).
