About

The Adventures of Tintin is a Franco-Belgian comic book series created by Belgian artist Georges Remi (Best known as Hergé) and is published by Casterman. The series follows the teenage Belgian reporter Tintin and his dog companion Snowy (French: Milou) as they solve numerous mysteries. The series of books is known for it's cleanly detailed illustrations from Hergé's clear line (french: ligne claire) drawing style, to it's well structured plots and stories associating with a variety of genres and for its slapstick humor.

As of 2007, The Adventures of Tintin series has been published in over 70 languages and has printed in over 200 million copies worldwide, as well as become the inspiration for numerous adaptations, including a motion capture film directed by Steven Spielberg.

History

The characters of the series have references and influences from real life personalities, especially the character Tintin is based off Hergé's earlier works, The Adventures of Totor, Chief Scout of the Cockshafers (French: Les Aventures de Totor, C.P. des hannetons) and is a inspiration of Danish Film actor Palle Huld who traveled the world at the age of 15 in 1928.[1]

There are 24 official complete titles published from 1930 to now on. From Tintin and the Land of the Soviets to Tintin and the Picaros (shown below, left and center, respectively).

Tintin and Alph-Art, an unfinished story due to Hergé's death, was published posthumously in 1986 (shown below, right)

Adaptations

Live-Action Films

The first two live-action film adaptations (Tintin and the Golden Fleece (French: Tintin et le mystère de la Toison d'Or and Tintin and the Blue Oranges (French: Tintin et les oranges bleues) of the heroic reporter and his companion dog were two original stories not based off the original books.

With Jean-Pierre Talbot as Tintin and Captain Haddock portrayed by Georges Wilson (Mystery of the Golden Fleece) and Jean Bouise (The Blue Oranges).

A third live-action Tintin film was scheduled to be made in 1967 but was cancelled.

The first traditionally animated films were 1969's Tintin and Temple of the Sun, which was based on The Seven Crystal Balls, and Tintin and Lake of Sharks, an original story.

Animated TV Show

39 Episodes based of each Tintin book (Except for Land of the Soviets and Tintin and the Congo) have been produced by Ellipse Programme and Nelvana Limited in two years. Though this adaptation has been toned down and plots have slightly changed from the original version to be suitable for younger audiences, it still stays faithful to the original and is one of the most faithful adaptations to the originals to this day.

The Adventures of Tintin

A film adaptation of Tintin and the Secret of the Unicorn was released in 2011 and was directed and produced by Steven Spielberg and also produced by Sir Peter Jackson as a motion captured, animated film.
The film has been positively received by critics, gaining a score of 75% certified fresh approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was intended to be the start of a film trilogy but has since remained the only film in the series.

2018 Meme Revival

On September 13th, 2018, the official SpaceX tweeted a photohraph fo the BFR spaceship designed to take a private citizen to space. After a commenter responded to the design as "very tintin-esque," SpaceX-founder Elon Musk tweeted, "Intentionally so" (shown below).[2]

About one week later, on September 22nd, 2018, Redditor [3] NinjaWalrus25 posted an object-labeled image macro from The Adventures of Tintin. They titled the tweet "Make Tin-Tin memes a thing." The tweet received more than 9,700 points (98% upvoted) and 70 comments in two days.

The following day, Redditor[4] DJDanBorge posted a Tintin image in the /r/me_irl subreddit. The post received more than 34,540 points (93% upvoted) and 295 comments. (shown below, center).

That day, Redditor[5] posted in the /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit, "What's up iwth the Tintin memes?" The post received more than 75 points (84% upvoted) and 15 comments. Some users said the revival was caused by a character in the manga My Hero Academia the resembles Tintin.

On September 24th, Redditor[6] redonehabib posted a Tintin meme in the /r/Meme_Economy subreddit (shown below, right). The post was titled "Tin Tin memes are on the rise! Invest quickly!" The post received more than 12,000 points (91% upvoted) and 1,500 comments in 24 hours.
